Maryland – A tragic incident occurred early Friday morning on the Prince George’s County Outer Loop of Interstate 495, resulting in the death of pedestrian Kerri Snead, a 32-year-old resident of Virginia. Maryland State Police (MSP) responded to reports of a pedestrian crash near I-95 and Allentown Road at around 3 a.m.

According to MSP, Kerri Snead was declared deceased at the scene. The vehicle involved in the collision remained at the site, and the driver was transported to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Following a temporary closure, all Outer Loop lanes have now resumed normal traffic flow.

An ongoing investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. The Capital Beltway, notorious for its traffic incidents, witnesses numerous collisions annually. Data from the WTOP Traffic Center’s incident database between September 1, 2017, and August 31, 2018, reported 3,463 collisions, including fender benders and pile-ups, across various sections of the Beltway in Maryland and Virginia.

The Beltway’s Maryland and Virginia sections notably recorded a significant number of collisions, particularly with a higher frequency in Montgomery County. Traffic figures released by the State Highway Administration of the Maryland Department of Transportation highlighted the heavy usage of the Beltway, with over 232,000 vehicles navigating between Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue in 2016.

The challenging road conditions, particularly the winding parts across Rock Creek and Sligo Creek, coupled with the substantial traffic flow, might contribute to the increased accident rates in certain sections of the Beltway.

The family of Kerri Snead will release further details regarding her obituary and funeral arrangements at a later date, allowing friends and the community to honor and remember her.
